The state elections in Saxony and Thuringia have had a major impact on the German political landscape. Voters of the AfD and BSW in the new federal states in particular have shown a growing adherence to right-wing populism and conspiracy ideologies. Both parties are using conspiracy ideology rhetoric in their election campaigns and, in view of the real socio-economic situation in the new federal states, are stirring up resentment against “elites” and general mistrust in political decisions.
